The medicine wheel is an ancient tool used in many Indigenous traditions to understand the cycles of life, nature, and personal growth. It’s a simple yet powerful way to connect with the rhythms of the earth and guide us through the ebbs and flows of our own journey. The medicine wheel reminds us that we don’t need to have everything figured out all at once. Life moves in cycles, and transformation happens when we honor each phase.
Here's how the medicine wheel can help you shed what no longer serves, embrace new beginnings, and step into your most authentic self:
South: Shedding the Old You
Season: Summer
Emotion: Courage, Growth
The South is all about growth and healing. It’s where we confront the old habits, fears, and limiting beliefs that keep us stuck in the past. For me, summer has always been a time when I start to realize the things I’m done with. Once the weather turns warm, I’m more energized and find myself ready to let go of things that aren’t serving me. Maybe it’s a routine I’ve outgrown, a relationship that’s not aligned with my growth, or just the old thought patterns I no longer need.
Summer offers a natural opportunity for that kind of realization. Like a snake shedding its skin, we’re invited to release the things that hold us back. It takes courage, but once you let go, you create so much more space for your true self to emerge.
Ask yourself: What am I still holding onto that’s keeping me stuck? How can I create more space for who I’m becoming?
West: Confronting the Shadows
Season: Autumn
Emotion: Introspection, Facing Shame
The West represents the deeper, shadowy work of transformation. For me, autumn always feels like the season when I can’t ignore the parts of myself I’ve been avoiding. The energy of the season calls for introspection, where we face the fears, insecurities, and wounds that we’ve kept hidden—often due to shame or past trauma.
This phase is all about shadow work, and it’s not always easy. It’s the time to confront what we’ve been running from and the parts of ourselves we’re ashamed of. But in doing this, we can heal and reclaim parts of us that have been buried. It’s about digging deep and learning from the pain, so we can emerge stronger and more whole.
Ask yourself: What parts of myself have I been avoiding? What can I learn from the pain I’ve been holding onto? How can I bring love and compassion to my shadows?
North: Trusting the Stillness and Integration
Season: Winter
Emotion: Patience, Trust, Waiting
The North is the time of stillness and integration. For me, winter always feels like the period when things slow down, and I have to trust that everything I’ve worked on is still in motion, even if I can’t see it. It’s a time when I reflect on everything I’ve learned, feeling both the weight and the wisdom of my experiences, but also waiting for the seeds I’ve planted to sprout. Winter is the season of quiet transformation beneath the surface.
This is the time when the universe is working behind the scenes, when our seeds are resting beneath the cold earth, preparing for a new cycle of growth. It’s easy to feel restless during this phase, but it’s important to trust that things are unfolding, even when we can’t see the evidence yet. Winter teaches us patience and the ability to trust that our efforts are not in vain.
Ask yourself: What am I waiting for to shift in my life? How can I trust the process and honor the stillness of this moment?
East: Embracing New Beginnings—The Completion of Transformation
Season: Spring
Emotion: Hope, Inspiration
The East marks the beginning of new cycles. For me, spring is when I feel the most hopeful and ready to take on new projects. After the quiet and introspection of winter, the fresh energy of spring feels like a burst of inspiration. I can feel the seeds I’ve planted finally begin to sprout, and there’s an excitement in the air for what’s to come.
This phase completes the cycle of transformation. It’s a time of renewal, rebirth, and fresh beginnings. The work you’ve done through the winter—waiting, trusting, and integrating—now comes to fruition. Spring invites you to step into your full potential, ready to create and share the fruits of your inner work with the world.
Ask yourself: What new dreams am I ready to bring to life? How can I fully embrace the next chapter of my journey?

Walking the Wheel
The medicine wheel isn’t just a one-time thing—it’s a cycle we move through over and over again, whether it’s across a year, a season, or even in a single day. Each phase brings its own insights, healing, and growth. By honoring each phase—we can stay connected to the natural rhythms of life, moving through our own personal transformations.
